The shortlist
01. Regatta Marizion Hooded Padded Jacket
The Lightweight Puffer That Looks Far More Expensive This is exactly the sort of everyday coat I love: uncomplicated, flattering and practical without looking overly outdoorsy. It's very warm yet surprisingly lightweight, making it an easy choice for everyday winter wear. The streamlined quilting avoids the bulky silhouette of some puffers, comfortable, in a variety of colours.

02. Regatta Hillpack II Insulated Jacket
The Hillpack II earns its place because it does something exceptionally useful: provides warmth without making you feel wrapped in an enormous duvet.
I particularly appreciate that its light weight and warm, and that combination makes it an excellent travelling coat as well as an everyday option. It's easy to layer and doesn't feel cumbersome when you're walking, shopping or getting in and out of the car.
Styling is practical rather than overtly glamorous, but that's also part of its appeal. If you plan on wearing chunky knitwear underneath, pay particular attention to sizing.

03. Regatta Bayletta Waterproof Jacket
There's a lot to like about the Bayletta, especially if you want weather protection without looking as though you're heading for a weekend expedition. It has a lightweight feel, comfort and attractive appearance, while its packability makes it particularly useful for travelling or keeping handy when the forecast is uncertain.
The more feminine silhouette gives it an advantage over boxier waterproof jackets. Just remember that this is principally about protection from wet weather rather than providing serious winter insulation.

04. Helly Hansen Women's Loke Jacket
If you want technical performance wrapped in a much cleaner silhouette, the Loke is one of my favourites. Its minimalist Scandinavian styling makes it surprisingly easy to wear away from the countryside. You will appreciate its lightness, construction and weather protection, while its understated appearance works equally well with casual weekend clothes. It's worth remembering that the Loke is essentially a shell rather than a heavily insulated winter jacket. Wear it over knitwear or a fleece and it becomes considerably more versatile.

05. Regatta Aldthorn Insulated Jacket
The Aldthorn sits in that very useful middle ground between a lightweight jacket and a huge winter puffer. Its appeal lies in versatility. It's smart enough for the school run or shopping but practical enough for walking and weekends outdoors. I particularly like the relatively neat silhouette. It gives you insulation without completely overwhelming your figure, although women looking for maximum protection in exceptionally cold weather may want something heavier.

06. Helly Hansen Women’s Raincoat
The Smart Waterproof That Makes Rainy Days Look Better
There’s something particularly appealing about a raincoat that manages to be genuinely practical without looking overly technical. This Helly Hansen has a clean, understated silhouette that I think works just as well for the commute or a weekend in town as it does for a wet country walk.
The longer cut is a real advantage when the weather turns, giving more coverage than a conventional short waterproof jacket. I also like the simplicity of the styling: it’s the sort of coat you can throw over jeans, leggings or casual workwear without giving your outfit an overtly outdoorsy feel.
Just remember that this is primarily a raincoat rather than a heavily insulated winter coat, so on colder days I’d plan to wear a jumper or fleece underneath.

07. Columbia Women's Powder Lite II
Columbia does an excellent job of producing technical clothing you don't have to reserve for the countryside, and the Powder Lite II illustrates that beautifully.
The fitted quilted shape gives it a sleeker appearance than an oversized puffer. I like the combination of warmth and relatively low weight, while its sporty styling works beautifully with jeans, leggings and boots.
The closer silhouette does mean women who love oversized knitwear underneath may want to consider sizing carefully.

08. 33,000ft Women's Waterproof Softshell Jacket Long Hooded Functional Jacket
The Lightweight Raincoat Made for Unpredictable Days
This is the kind of jacket that earns its place in the wardrobe because it’s so easy to grab when the weather can’t make up its mind. The 33,000ft jacket combines a clean, flattering shape with the practical appeal of a lightweight waterproof, making it particularly well suited to walking, travelling and everyday outdoor wear.
I like that it doesn’t have the heavy, cumbersome appearance of a traditional winter coat. It’s much more of a layer-and-go jacket: wear it over a T-shirt in milder weather or add a fleece or knit underneath when temperatures drop. The longer cut also gives it a little more protection and a smarter silhouette than a short windbreaker.

09. IDEALSANXUN Women’s Long Double-Breasted Wool Coat
The Classic Tailored Coat That Instantly Smartens an Outfit
After several practical puffers and waterproofs, this IDEALSANXUN coat brings something rather different to the collection. The longline, double-breasted design has a much smarter, more polished appearance and is an easy way to make even a simple jeans-and-boots outfit look put together.
I particularly like this style for autumn and winter days when you want warmth without looking dressed for a country walk. The traditional tailored shape works beautifully over knitwear, dresses and workwear, making it one of the more versatile fashion-led choices in our selection.
